Singers How to Warm Up Your Vocal Cords
Singers How to Warm Up Your Vocal Cords Suzy S. Image via Wikipedia Ancient civilizations discovered powerful truths about vocalizing and singing that are relevant to modern students of voice and song. We all go through our daily lives speaking, humming, and singing some of the time without realizing the effects of things we do half-consciously. Or maybe we just suspect it! Well here are some facts!! By focusing on singing, speaking, or chanting the vowels (A,E,I,O,U) we release a myriad of emotions in an uplifting and healing manner. Chanting or singing mantras are based on vowel-combinations that when chanted in a particular way produce a vibrating effect on our entire system, our nerves, glands, and the brain. Here are some vowel sounds to use for warmup drills. Singers, performers of all kinds, and instrumentalists may benefit from using these simple exercises. A (pronounced âAhâ) Induces a state of calm, peace, serenity. Resonates at the toop of the thorax and esophagus (upper chest). The vibrations have a healing effect on the heart. A(pronounced as in âglassâ) resonates in the upper part of the lungs.E(pronounced âehâ) Develops self-confidence. It resonates in the neck, throat, vocal chords, teeth, and thyroid glands. I (pronounced âeeâ) is the vowel of laughter. It resonates in the bridge of the nose and crown of the head, affecting the brain and organs of the skull. O (pronounced as in âhomeâ) Turns inward and gives the sensation of seriousness, completion, and perfection. It vibrates in the lower part of the lung, heart, and stomach. OU (pronounced âooâ) has a similar sensation to O, but sweeter. It vibrates in the lower abdomen, affecting the kidneys and stomach. Simple warmup exercises that help you get emotionally clear and refreshed: Balancing the Whole Body: A E I (pronounced ahh-ee) O OU For the ears: ENN For the nose and sinuses: MA For the head and jaw: YA YOU YAI For the stomach: HUH HUH HUH Vowels are to be sounded with the full energy of a deep breath. For example, when using I (pronounced ah-eee), inhale first, and then without exhaling, sound a strong and piercing EEEEE, parting your mouth as in a smile. Keep at the same pitch. Keep sounding as you exhale but do not use up all your air. Rest and repeat the exercise 3 to 4 times. Soon you will notice a definite vibrating effect in your head which is pleasant. This activity helps to clear the brain, eyes, nose, and ears. This is a good morning exercise!! Richard is a voice, guitar and piano instructor in Berkeley, CA.

The Benefits of Online Tuition
The Benefits of Online Tuition Here at Tutorfair, we are seeing more lessons than ever before taking place online - making up to 50% of Tutorfair lessons, on some days! For some clients and tutors, online tuition can seem like a strange method of teaching at first. We asked one of our top tutors, Jim R, to share his experience tutoring online... Iâve been working as a tutor for TutorFair for around five years and recently completed teacher training. I was lucky enough to be employed, after a rewarding PGCE year in London state schools, by Wellington College â" one of the UKâs leading independent boarding schools. My wife and I had to relocate to Crowthorne, which was exciting in one sense as we were beginning a new rural chapter in an idyllic setting within a rich academic community. In another, it felt a shame as I would no longer be able to tutor in person. I loved my time as an âon callâ tutor in London and I was apprehensive about the effectiveness of online communication as a means through which to tutor English lessons â" how would I build rapport? How would I use educational resources imaginatively and interactively? Would it feel too clinical, impersonal, detached? I have since found online tutoring to be equally â" if not more â" effective. As far as building a warm and constructive relationship with tutees go, I feel thereâs an advantage to having the session âbroadcastâ as it can lend a more performative element to the job. While there can be no substitute for hard work to progress tutees, being able to make your tutees laugh can be transformative as far as learning goes, and the fact the session is framed by a face in close up does appeal to tutees and tutors (like this one) who arenât strangers to an opportunity for judiciously timed silliness. There has been no change to the effective use of resources; in fact, itâs more straightforward if the internet is a mid-session click away. I can ask parents to email me teacher instructions well ahead of the session if thereâs specific school-work that they would like covered, but I can also email specific texts or exercises with a weekâs (or more) notice to mums and dads so tutees have hard copies ready well in advance, should this be necessary. Saying this, printing can be done away with entirely if the online session is run through Google Hangouts â" the screen can be shared, meaning homework or resources can be worked on collaboratively without recourse to hard copies. Online tuition suits busy parents better as their time commitment is far reduced as disruption to family life is minimised. Thereâs no letting me in, finding a space, letting me out. I can email feedback and take up only as much time as the session demands. Thereâs also peace of mind as parents can see exactly how many minutes Iâve spent online. The session is pure tuition, small talk is reduced and, as a consequence, there is value for money. Of course none of this precludes lengthy conversations with parents if they are needed. Another major bonus of this form of tutoring is that itâs possible to be anywhere in the world and still receive tuition. I have worked with many families who value consistency and routine in their childâs education and who prefer to keep tuition ticking over during longer holidays or where itâs necessary to re-locate for a time. I worked with an American family who were on a tour of the world together for a year, they kept up tuition in creative writing with their two boys throughout the trip. Needless to say I was often struck by the curious locations the boys Skyped from â" jungles, beaches and â" perhaps most unusually â" the Arctic circle! If youâre considering online tuition, but are yet undecided, I would be happy to chat to you about the process. What an age to be alive! Jim R is one of our top English tutors. As well as being a fantastic private tutor, Jim is a fully qualified teacher at Wellington College, one of the UK's leading public schools. Interested in booking a lesson with Jim? My Volunteering Experience at St. Aloysius College
My Volunteering Experience at St. Aloysius College On Thursday 2nd July, less than a week after signing up with Tutorfair, I was given my first volunteering task - a UCAS (Undergraduate Courses at University and College) talk at St. Aloysius College in North London. Public speaking is not one of my (many) talents, so I was a little apprehensive when confronted with a classroom full of 30 energetic Year 12 students and only one other volunteer helper, Rosa. However, once I'd introduced myself, the questions about university were fired so frequently I forgot to be nervous! To make things more manageable, we split the students into two groups. This ensured myself and Rosa were able to get to know the pupils and really provide in depth answers to their many questions, which encompassed all aspects of university life, from living at home or on campus, to how different university teaching is from school teaching. Here, I spoke about my wonderful time at LSE as a student who commutes to save money and how difficult I found the transition to university, where studying is far more independent than at school. After twenty minutes I swapped groups with Rosa and was met with the same enthusiasm from the second batch of students who were particularly interested in advice on writing personal statements, which they would be drafting the very next day at school. I gave them the only piece of advice I found valuable from my own school time: write with enough passion to remind the admissions professors why they chose to study that same discipline all those years ago. It was such a pleasure to work with the students at St. Aloysius and provide some answers to the exact same queries I had before going to university three years ago. All in all, it was an afternoon well spent and I'd recommend volunteering with Tutorfair to everyone!

Healthy Options When Ordering Food Delivery
Healthy Options When Ordering Food Delivery Photo Via: Pixabay.com 1. Salad Itâs an age-old option for a reason â" salad is easily one of the healthiest options on most menus. That being said, donât fall victim to the salad trap. Many individuals assume that a salad is always healthy, but dressing can ensure thatâs not the case. Between fries and a vat of Caesar dressing, youâre likely eating more calories by choosing a salad drowning in dressing. So, in these cases, it typically makes more sense to order your dressing on the side to ensure your salad is actually a healthy choice. 2. Tofu Vegetarians typically have a small selection on each menu that they order off of, but even if you arenât a vegetarian, you should consider taking a look at these selections. Typically, vegetarian options, such as tofu, will actually save you a large number of calories and are just as filling. One of the biggest areas in which this is relevant is with Chinese food. Rather than ordering orange chicken, which is deep-fried and extremely unhealthy, tofu options can give you just as much flavor with far fewer calories to worry about. 3. Lean Meats In this same line of thinking, you should also consider eating lean meats rather than red meats with a lot of fat. While you may be craving a fattening, greasy cheeseburger, itâs certainly not the healthiest item on the menu, so choosing a chicken sandwich instead can help to save calories. You can also choose fish options, tofu or any other leaner meat than ground beef. Just make sure that when you choose lean meats, you are choosing grilled options, as crispier options are typically deep-fried and therefore unhealthy alternatives that youâll want to stay as far away from as possible! 4. Small Portions The smaller the portions, the more likely you are to have a healthy meal. That being said, this doesnât mean that a small side of fries will be as healthy as a small side salad, which seems like common sense, but in some instances, the appearance of food can be deceiving. This is why you should always take a look at the calorie counts on the menu. For this reason, make sure you consider smaller portions of fast food, and perhaps several of the healthier options, to ensure you are full but that you are also choosing healthier items in your food selection. 5. Different Sides Half the battle when ordering food is combating the awful, unhealthy sides that are available to you in fast food. Rather than adding fries, mozzarella sticks or onion rings to your order, opt for the healthier alternatives. For instance, rather than fries, add a side of apple slices to your order. Or rather than onion rings, get a small side salad. Remember that there are a million other options to choose from, not just in entrées, but also in sides, so there is always a healthier choice on the menu that you are able to choose. 6. Fewer Carbs Last, but certainly not least, you should always choose fewer carbs rather than more carbs, as these can account for a large amount of the calories you consume in fast food. For instance, ordering a burrito is a healthier choice if served over brown rice rather than on a flour tortilla. Some individuals choose to order hamburgers without the bun or to have a sandwich in a lettuce wrap rather than on two pieces of bread. Some individuals also hollow out the bread used to make their sandwiches in order to remove some of the calories there within. Food delivery is certainly a fantastic invention when youâre not in the mood to cook, but itâs a bit more difficult when considering your need for healthy food options. For this reason, the above six options are a great starting point to consider when looking for healthier options in food delivery. However, make sure you take a close look at the menu at each place you order from, getting a full overview of the menu rather than reverting back to your unhealthy favorites every time.
The GMAT AWA (Analytical Writing Assessment) Checklist
The GMAT AWA (Analytical Writing Assessment) Checklist Tips From an Irvine English Tutor: The GMAT AWA Checklist Some future MBAs are excellent writers and have the essay portion under control, others however will need substantial practice before theyre able to ace the AWA. GMAT students are encouraged to adhere to the following checklist before taking their exam. 1. Practice Write a full-length practice essay based on a prompt from the official GMAT site or a reputable test prep company. Students who have not written a traditional analytical essay for a while need to get a baseline score of where their writing skills currently lie. After finishing a full-length practice essay, students are encouraged to do the following: Compare their essay to an example of an essay that received a perfect score (available on the official GMAT website). Ask a GMAT expert to grade the practice essay (this could be a professional who received a perfect AWA score or a seasoned Orange County educational consultant). Take into account the amount of time that it took to write the essay (it should be under 30 minutes). 2. Create an outline GMAT students should remember to create a concise outline before writing their essay. To receive a high-score on the AWA, essays will need to be organized and have appropriate transitions and flow, as with any formal essay. Because the writer only has 30 minutes, itâs recommended that they spend between one and three minutes on their outline, but no more (READ: The Students Guide to Study Breaks). 3. Evaluate the prompt Itâs important for students to think about what is really being asked; they should highlight important keywords and phrases and ignore words or sentences that are intentionally confusing. Over time, this will not only help the writer finish in the allotted 30 minutes but also significantly enhance the quality of their essay. 4. Demonstrate a clear position or thesis GMAT students need to have a clear position for their analysis. A transparent position makes the analysis clearer and more evident to the grader and will help keep the essay content on track (READ: Tutoring and Test Scores: Assessing Improvement). 5. Donât insert ones own opinion Students should not be tempted to insert their own opinion, even if they have a great one. The AWA is asking the writer to critique the argument that has been presented, and nothing more. 6. Display adequate transitions and flow Writers who do not have adequate transitions in their essay will find that their analysis may not be concisely and clearly presented, even if their content is excellent. The grader will want to see appropriate flow throughout the AWA, as with any formal essay. 7. Proofread Writers are highly advised to leave at least three minutes to proofread their essay once they have finished. Many students make small mistakes here and there that can add up to an overall poor quality of writing including errors in spelling, grammar, and punctuation that is distracting to the grader. Students who leave adequate time to proofread will have a clear argument as well as a properly written essay, while students who consistently run out of time while writing practice essays should consider proofreading each paragraph as they write. 8. The intro and conclusion The GMAT analytical writing assessment should include a proper introduction and conclusion. Without this, the essay will appear to be a jumble of thoughts without a consistent structure and the content will not be clearly presented to the grader. In Short Students are advised to follow the above checklist when writing their GMAT analytical writing assessment, but should also be aware that practice makes perfect. GMAT students should write a minimum of 5 to 10 practice essays that are graded by an expert in order to ensure the best chance of success on the real exam. The Responsibilities of a Computer Science Tutor
The Responsibilities of a Computer Science TutorThe responsibilities of a computer science tutor are many. Not only must the tutor understand the math and science that are used in computing, but they must also have good communication skills with students as well as deal with a wide variety of students, both at the high school and college level.Students should expect to see their tutor face to face. In fact, they should expect to have a lengthy discussion at least every two weeks about things that are going on at school. Teachers usually have to refer back to the tutor all the time, making it even more important for the student to see their tutor. A student who doesn't see their teacher weekly will miss out on helpful suggestions from the tutor that could make a difference in the success of their computer science course.Students that are going to be taking a computer science course should expect to talk to the tutor about upcoming projects. If the student has a lot of interest in comp uter science and wants to go into this field, then he or she will be expected to contact the tutor with their questions and concerns. It is also possible that the student might need to discuss issues about applying for scholarships, getting funding for school, getting a job, etc. with the tutor.Every year, students are required to take a course that tests them on the subjects that they already know. These courses, which often last the entire year, are called 'core courses'. If the student is using these courses as part of their curriculum, then they must be included in any communication that the tutor might have with the student. The main focus of the tutor should be to help students learn the skills they need to be successful in computer science.Students that need to see a real tutor should expect to see their tutor as often as they can. Tasks that are shared between the tutor and the student should be completed in one class. Ifthis class is a lecture-style class, then the tutor sh ould always be present in order to answer any questions or concerns the student may have.Communication is a major contribution that the tutor makes. If the student can't communicate what they want to the tutor, then the student might not get what they need. In addition, the student should not hesitate to give the tutor some feedback regarding things that may be lacking or need improvement. The responsibilities of a computer science tutor extend far beyond teaching students how to use computers. A student who wants to be successful in the field should try to make the best of this opportunity to improve his or her knowledge.

Impact Factor 101
Impact Factor 101The Journal of Biological Chemistry has an annual impact factor of three hundred and sixty-five and this makes it the third best published journal in the world after the Life Sciences Journals. This is good for anyone wanting to earn the right credentials for medical, pharmaceutical, or life science jobs in the country and world wide.It is also a good journal for anyone who wants to get a BSc in Biochemistry or Biotechnology with a speciality in metabolic engineering, and having a specialization in biochemistry would be a plus. The journal is an absolute must for anyone interested in medical research, particularly those who wish to pursue a PhD in Bioengineering or Biomedical Engineering. Biochemical engineering is a very broad discipline, which includes the molecular biology, proteomics, and cancer research. One can use a specialised technical degree in Biochemistry to work in the space industry. But the only problem with the Journal of Biological Chemistry is that i ts impact factor does not necessarily reflect what the quality of the published paper is. There is a standard set of impact factors used to measure the quality of the papers, but the Journal of Biological Chemistry uses only three of these: negative, moderate, and positive.People who are looking for a job in Biotechnology may want to consider using the impact factor of two hundred and fifty, which is the minimum for a good job. But if one wants to pursue a PhD in Biochemistry or Biotechnology, they will have to use the high impact factor of three hundred and sixty-five. You do not need to worry if you choose to use the low impact factor because the Journal of Biological Chemistry uses the impact factor of negative. It should be noted that the impact factor does not mean that the paper is unimportant. The journal is reviewed by two senior editors and they should give the paper a fair review. If a scientific article seems good and is a good read, the editors will probably accept it as well. You may find this a disappointing result, if you are expecting a bad score for a positive result. The higher the impact factor, the more likely it is that the editor will accept a negative result and then the editors usually review the rest of the paper too. One of the biggest things about using the Journal of Biological Chemistry is that it is the only journal that will publish you if you have submitted your research paper to the journal. An important thing to remember when choosing the impact factor is that the more obscure the journal, the more likely the results are going to be extremely weak. The Journal of Biological Chemistry is one of the better journals for people who are doing a medical research job, and so it is important to get an impact factor of one hundred and seventy for this. If you are not into biomedical research and are not interested in going into a biotechnological lab, this journal may not be a good choice. But if you are interested in biotechnology, then you will want to look at this journal.

This will build on the quality of learning that the teacher is doing in the classroom and build confidence for both the teacher and the student.Tutoring is a way to develop students' ability to think for themselves and to create new ways of learning that will be useful to them and to others. It is also a way to enjoy being an active participant in the learning process. The overall quality of a teacher's job will improve, as will the overall effectiveness of a classroom.
